California Asthma Partners is hosting a webinar in a series dedicated to the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Asthma in California. This webinar focuses on Goal 4: Indoor Environments.
During the same period that awareness of the importance of controlling asthma triggers in the places where children with asthma live and learn has risen, the resources available to schools to maintain their facilities have contracted dramatically. It is more important than ever that schools educate their staffs about asthma trigger control, and utilize the low cost/no cost “tools” in EPA’s “Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tools for Schools” Action Kit. However, the deepened budget crisis often imposes psychological obstacles on top of fiscal obstacles to their doing so.
U.S. EPA's Barbara Spark and Shelly Rosenblum have been collaborating with California schools and asthma partners on improving school IAQ for more than 15 years. In this webinar, they will share their insights into the key components of both the successes and disappointments in the implementation of sustainable programs for asthma-friendly indoor environments in California schools. Their experience tells them that direct involvement by asthma advocates and informed members of the community is a vital and necessary component in helping schools achieve their goals of providing safe and healthful places for all children to learn, which they will describe.
Participants in this webinar will learn:
1.Ways to get schools and school districts to embrace a comprehensive IAQ management program, while recognizing why they may not immediately do so.2. How to get teachers and staff to embrace recommendations for classrooms and offices .
3. What relationships between district maintenance staff and school-site staff may prevent progress.
4. What works and what doesn't work to overcome the above and develop a successful IAQ management program.
5. Resources and tools available to help asthma advocates and community members effect positive change.
